Japan Inflation Rate Surges to 1.7% in June
The Bank of Japan will be monitoring inflation data closely as it prepares for its upcoming meeting on July 30-31. According to recent numbers, Japan's headline inflation rate jumped to 1.7% year-over-year in June, exceeding the prior month's rate of 1.5%. This increase was largely driven by higher energy prices.
The core Consumer Price Index (CPI), which excludes food and energy costs, rose 1.6% in June, matching market expectations. The ex-food and energy CPI, often referred to as 'core-core', saw a slower rise of 1.7%, the smallest increase since August 2022.
The Bank of Japan will be taking note of this data ahead of its meeting next week. Analysts are expecting the BOJ to maintain its cautious stance on inflation, but some may see easing risks as a result of these numbers.
