Japan Opens Up to Budget Travelers with Record Indian Arrivals

In recent years, Japan has transformed from an elite-only destination to a viable option for budget-conscious travelers. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), Indian tourists have seen a 35.2% year-on-year increase between January and December 2025, with a record-breaking 43,000 arrivals in May alone.

This accessibility is driven by three primary factors: a strategic push by the Japanese government to create an 'India-friendly' ecosystem, increased direct air connectivity, and a significant macroeconomic shift in currency valuation. The depreciation of the Japanese Yen (JPY) against the Indian Rupee (INR) has nearly doubled the purchasing power of the Rupee.

The trend has shifted toward 'micro-trips,' highly focused excursions targeting a single city like Tokyo or Osaka, which is financially superior to traditional two-week tours. By staying within one city, travelers can eliminate expensive bullet train tickets and reduce accommodation spend.
