Japan Post Holdings' Ordinary Profit Surges 51%, Driven by Banking Unit
Japan Post Holdings reported a 51% surge in ordinary profit to ¥339.8 billion (approximately $2.2 billion) for its fiscal year 2027 first quarter, driven primarily by Japan Post Bank's performance.
The bank's ordinary profit jumped ¥99.6 billion (approximately $632.2 million) year-on-year to ¥253.5 billion (approximately $1.6 billion), accounting for a commanding 74.6% of the group's consolidated ordinary profit.
Net interest income surged ¥174.8 billion (approximately $1.1 billion) to ¥407.1 billion (approximately $2.6 billion), thanks in part to the Bank of Japan's monetary policy normalization.
However, the group's postal and logistics business suffered a loss of ¥5.6 billion (approximately $35.5 million), with operating expenses increasing by ¥1.1 billion (approximately $7.0 million) year-on-year, driven primarily by delivery outsourcing costs.
