Japan Pours More Funds into Chipmaker Rapidus Amid Industry Boom
Japan's industry ministry plans to invest an additional 150 billion yen in Rapidus Corp., a Japanese chip company, through its fiscal 2027 budget request. This investment is aimed at further strengthening the company's financial base and attracting more private investments.
The government has already invested 250 billion yen in Rapidus, and this new injection of funds will bring the total to 400 billion yen. The ministry expects this additional investment to have a positive impact on the company's finances and attract more private sector involvement.
Rapidus aims to start mass-producing cutting-edge semiconductors, and the government is providing support through various means. In addition to the 150 billion yen in direct investment, the ministry will provide about 2.4 trillion yen in research and development aid to Rapidus. It is also considering providing an additional 300 billion yen.
Furthermore, Japan's three megabanks plan to provide a total of around 2 trillion yen in loans to Rapidus, with the government guaranteeing around 80% of these loans.
