Japan Retail Sales Plummet 4.1% in June
Japan's retail sales dropped sharply in June, reversing May's gain and underscoring the volatility in consumer behavior. The seasonally adjusted index of retail sales declined by 4.1% compared to the previous month, marking the largest monthly drop since the onset of pandemic-related disruptions in 2020.
The year-on-year comparison remained positive, with retail sales up 2.1% from June 2023, reflecting a gradual recovery from last year's slump. However, the month-on-month contraction suggests that momentum stalled in the second quarter, as households grappled with persistent inflation and subdued wage growth.
The decline comes at a critical juncture for the Bank of Japan, which has been gradually moving toward policy normalization. Policymakers are closely watching consumption patterns to gauge whether the economy can sustain a virtuous cycle of rising wages and spending, a key condition for further interest rate hikes.
