Japan Seeks Record Debt-Servicing Costs Amid Rising Interest Rates
Japan's Finance Ministry is seeking a record-breaking 36,638.6 billion yen in debt-servicing costs for fiscal year 2027, a significant increase from the initial budget of fiscal year 2026.
The planned allocation marks a 5,362.8 billion yen hike, attributed to rising long-term interest rates due to inflation and concerns about Japan's fiscal health.
The assumed interest rate on long-term Japanese government bonds will rise to 3.8 percent for fiscal 2027 from 3.0 percent in fiscal 2026, leading to a projected 27.2 percent increase in interest payments.
