Japan Seeks Record Defense Budget Amid Rising Security Threats
Japan's Defense Ministry has submitted a record budget request of 8.89 trillion yen for fiscal year 2027, aimed at countering growing security threats from China, Russia, and North Korea.
The requested budget is the largest in history, exceeding 56 billion US dollars. The final amount could grow to around 10 trillion yen during year-end budget negotiations, according to government and ruling Liberal Democratic Party officials.
The defense buildup is expected to focus on projects related to national security documents, which are set for a planned revision by the end of the year.
