Japan Stocks Extend Rally on Rate Hopes and AI Gains
Japan's stock markets continued their upward trend on Friday, buoyed by strong gains in major indices and expectations of lower interest rates from the Federal Reserve. The Nikkei 225 rose 0.59% to close at 68,714, while the Topix gained 0.51% to 4,197.
The improved sentiment was driven in part by softer US inflation data, which reduced the likelihood of a September rate hike from the Fed. Market analysts now see about a 35% chance of a 25-basis-point rate increase in September, down from 55% just one week prior.
In Japan, investors are also watching for potential interest rate adjustments from the Bank of Japan, which could be influenced by a weaker yen and resulting inflationary pressures. Technology stocks led the gains on Friday, with companies like Kioxia Holdings, Advantest, and SoftBank Group seeing notable increases in value.
For the week, the Nikkei 225 rose 4.74%, while the Topix gained 3%. The strong performance of Japan's major indices comes as investors seek out opportunities in a global market where interest rates are expected to remain low for the foreseeable future.
