Japan Stuck with Ailing Yen, South Korea Grapples with Vanishing Earnings
Japan and South Korea are facing distinct economic challenges due to their weak currencies relative to the dollar. According to professor Kang-Kook Lee, South Korean companies have stopped bringing earnings home, while Japan is struggling with outdated financial policies.
The Japanese yen has been experiencing significant depreciation, making imports more expensive and eroding purchasing power for consumers. In contrast, the won has seen a sharp decline in value, leading to a decrease in foreign exchange reserves for South Korea's central bank.
Professor Lee suggests that Japan needs to update its financial policies to improve its currency's competitiveness. This includes implementing measures to boost exports and stimulate economic growth, which would help stabilize the yen's value.
