Japan Taps Blockchain for Instant Bond and Stock Settlements

Japan's government and the Bank of Japan are working together to create an instant settlement system for bonds and stocks using blockchain technology. This project aims to eliminate the time lag in current account deposits held by commercial banks at the Bank of Japan, which can take up to two business days.

The plan involves converting part of these deposits into digital currency tokens that circulate on a blockchain network, allowing for delivery versus payment (DvP) without the need for a third-party intermediary. This could lead to faster settlement times and increased efficiency in financial markets.

Major Japanese banks and brokerages are already conducting pilot tests using tokenized government bonds and stocks managed on blockchain networks. The project's success may expand to cross-border remittances, with potential implications for international trade.
