The Japanese government is using funds from a higher departure tax to support tourism in the country.

The International Tourist Tax, which was increased last year, will raise an estimated 130 billion yen (US$817.7 million) in the 2026 financial year.

This money will be used for various projects aimed at addressing problems linked to chronic overtourism, such as promoting Japan as a destination and developing large resort facilities.
