Japan Tobacco Boosts Dividend Amid Strong First Half Results

Japan Tobacco's strong first half performance has led to a higher dividend payout for shareholders. The company announced its interim dividend was lifted to 136 yen per share, up from a previous forecast of 121 yen and last year's 104 yen. This decision comes after the company reported a significant increase in profit and revenue for the period.

The firm's profit attributable to owners rose to 431.8 billion yen in the first half, a 35% jump from the same period last year. Revenue climbed 18% to 1.986 trillion yen. The company also raised its full-year dividend forecast to 272 yen per share and targeted profit of 644 billion yen on revenue of 3.885 trillion yen.

The higher payout is seen as a positive sign for investors, but it also raises the stakes for the second half of the year. If Japan Tobacco falls short of its profit goal, the market may question the sustainability of the dividend. The company's basic earnings per share (EPS) target stands at 362.74 yen.
