Japan Unveils Blockchain-Driven 24/7 Trading System for Bonds and Stocks
The Japanese government is planning to introduce a new settlement system using blockchain technology that could enable 24/7 trading of bonds and stocks. This effort involves the country's government, the Bank of Japan (BOJ), regulators, and financial firms, as reported by Nikkei.
A research group comprising the Financial Services Agency (FSA), Ministry of Finance, BOJ, and financial organizations is expected to be formed to explore the role of blockchain technology in creating a new generation of settlement systems for government bonds and stocks. The infrastructure is designed to operate on a real-time, round-the-clock basis, shortening the period associated with traditional market timing.
The study team is set to begin its activities this summer, with the development strategy expected to be ready by 2027. The Bank of Japan will play an active role in this project, along with various government departments and financial institutions. This initiative may also help financial institutions find ways to integrate blockchain technology with their current settlement infrastructure.
The success of the Japan Blockchain settlement system could set a new approach for processing bonds and stocks in Japan. Continuous operation is expected to increase the flexibility of financial companies and decrease transaction settlement time. The project can also serve as an example for other countries looking to implement blockchain technology in finance.
