Japan and the US have confirmed that they carried out a coordinated intervention to halt the yen's slide. According to two Japanese government officials, the announcement will be made by Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama on Monday.

The joint operation is seen as an effort to counter what Tokyo and Washington view as excessive depreciation of the yen.

Market sources describe the intervention as rounds of yen-buying by Japanese and US authorities aimed at lifting the currency from its weakest levels against the dollar since 1986.
