Japan Vows to Reinforce Yen Amid Joint Efforts with US
The yen's recent struggles have prompted a new phase in Japan's battle against currency bears. Despite its initial gains, the yen has lost about half of its value against the dollar since a joint US-Japan operation to support the currency on July 31.
This round of interventions marked the first such tag-team effort in 28 years and was part of a broader campaign to strengthen the yen. The Fed repo facility is one element of this strategy, aiming to stabilize currency and bond markets that have outgrown unilateral action.
Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, along with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, are seeking a solution to the yen's woes. The goal is to produce more stability in currency markets, which have seen unprecedented volatility lately.
