Japanese Convenience Stores Cut Prices on Staple Snack
Japan's largest convenience store chains have made a significant move to cut prices on their staple snack, onigiri rice balls. The decision comes after years of inflation pushed prices up and consumers began trimming daily spending due to price resistance.
The three major chains - 7-Eleven Japan, FamilyMart, and Lawson - will reduce prices across various onigiri varieties. For example, Lawson's Temaki Onigiri lineup will see a 10 yen drop in after-tax prices, with some items falling from 181 yen to 171 yen.
The price cuts are seen as a permanent reset of baseline pricing rather than temporary sales promotions. Convenience store operators hope lower shelf prices will restore transaction counts and protect store traffic, which has been impacted by consumers' reduced spending due to higher onigiri prices.
