Japanese Government Seeks Record Budget to Boost AI and Semiconductors
The Ministry of Finance in Japan has submitted a budget request of 38.7 trillion yen for fiscal year 2027, covering the period from April 2027 through March 2028.
This is part of a larger total government spending bid that has shattered records, exceeding 130 trillion yen. The previous record was 122 trillion yen.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has put in the most eye-catching sectoral request, seeking approximately 7.7 trillion yen for growth strategy investments, with artificial intelligence and semiconductor development at the top of the priority list.
The government will need to issue additional bonds to bridge the difference between projected tax revenues of 83 trillion yen and total spending requests that far exceed that figure.
