Japanese PPI Hits 3-Month High Amid Soaring Raw Material Prices
The Japanese producer price index (PPI) has continued to rise for the third consecutive month, exceeding 7% year-over-year in August. The Bank of Japan announced that PPI increased by 7.6% in August, reaching a value of 136.1.
This is more than the market forecast by 0.2 percentage points and follows July's rate of increase, which was revised upwards to 7.7%. The rise in PPI is largely due to soaring raw material prices and increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) products.
The price of raw materials and parts has surged due to the expansion of the AI industry, with data center facility prices jumping by 43.3%, expanding from a previous increase of 2.6 percentage points. Information and communication devices also rose by 19.5% due to strong demand for memory semiconductors.
The impact of rising crude oil prices is being felt throughout various industries, with oil and coal products increasing by 14.7% due to instability in the Middle East. The Bank of Japan notes that this instability is leading to price hikes being passed on to final products.
