Japanese Travel Spending Rises Amid Decrease in Visitor Numbers
Domestic travel in Japan has shown a slight decrease in visitor numbers, but an increase in spending. According to a recent survey by Jalan Research Center (JRC), the total number of domestic travelers was estimated at 224 million, down 0.4% from the previous fiscal year. However, the average travel expenditure per person increased by 2.5%, reaching 65,700 yen in FY2025.
The survey targeted 15,548 travelers nationwide and found that spending in destinations was a major contributor to the overall increase in travel expenses. Out of the total expenditure, spending in destinations accounted for 43.8% or 3.7 trillion yen. Tokyo remained the most popular destination, attracting 11 million visitors.
The survey also revealed trends reflecting diversifying needs among travelers. For instance, 'visiting theme parks' was a more common activity for family trips with children of elementary school age or younger, and 'watching sports or live entertainment' was more popular among solo travelers compared to the overall average.
