Japanese Yen Faces Sustained Weakness Amid Trade Imbalance and Capital Outflows
The Japanese Yen is facing significant challenges due to its persistent trade and capital flow dynamics. According to BNY, the yen's vulnerability stems from large outflows of funds by Japanese investors seeking higher yields abroad.
These outflows have led to a structurally weak yen, which has resulted in the USD/JPY pair hovering near multi-decade highs. While occasional intervention by Japanese authorities can provide temporary relief, it does not address the underlying flow imbalance.
The analysis from BNY highlights that Japan's persistent current account surplus is offset by income outflows and portfolio investments. As long as the interest rate differential between Japan and the US remains wide, the yen is likely to stay exposed to selling pressure.
