Japanese Yen Slips Amid Renewed Trade Tensions
The Japanese yen weakened against major currencies on Wednesday as trade tensions resurfaced. The dollar rose to 151.20 yen in early Asian trading, up 0.3% from the previous close.
Despite its traditional role as a safe-haven currency, the yen's underperformance can be attributed to Japan's heavy reliance on energy imports and the Bank of Japan's ultra-loose monetary policy. This has offset its appeal as a risk-free asset during times of uncertainty.
The yen's decline has mixed effects for global markets. Japanese exporters benefit from a weaker currency, but it also increases the cost of imported goods, particularly energy and raw materials, which can fuel inflation in Japan and squeeze household budgets.
