Japanese Yen Strengthens Against US Dollar Amid BoJ Tightening Bets
The Japanese Yen has strengthened against the US Dollar, reaching its firmest level since February. According to MUFG's Michael Wan, the yen's strength is due to market pricing of faster Bank of Japan tightening.
A 25 bps hike at the BoJ meeting in September is seen as largely priced in, with attention shifting towards future rate guidance. Wan projects that USD/JPY will drift towards the low 150s over time as the BoJ hikes in September and January.
The recent moves in USD/JPY corroborate with a potential reduction in yen shorts, given the scale of existing positioning and historical patterns. Japan's foreign reserves data for August also highlighted the potential magnitude of intervention, with a decline of 6.2% to $1.208 billion.
