The Japanese Yen has surged to its highest level in over a week against the US Dollar, sparking speculation that authorities may have intervened in the foreign exchange market.

USD/JPY fell nearly 0.9% on Wednesday as hawkish expectations from the Bank of Japan (BoJ) drove strong buying for the Japanese currency.

A BoJ board member, Hajime Takata, has called for a more nimble approach to raising interest rates, saying the central bank needs 'a different response' than its conventional semiannual rate-hike pace.

Takata's comments come as Governor Kazuo Ueda said on Tuesday that the BoJ will discuss whether to raise interest rates at its September 17-18 meeting to address growing inflation risks.
