Japan's Benchmark Bond Yield Nears 30-Year High at 2.945%

Japan's benchmark bond yield is nearing 3% for the first time since the mid-1990s, marking a significant shift in market dynamics. The 10-year Japanese government bond (JGB) yield reached 2.945% on Tuesday, surpassing levels seen since September 1996. This milestone marks the seventh consecutive session of gains.

The surge in yields is attributed to increasing wages and inflation, as well as concerns about heavy government bond issuance and spending. According to Shoki Omori, Deutsche Bank's chief fixed income strategist for Japan, this situation represents normalization with a warning label, not a crisis. He notes that once the BOJ delivers and the terminal rate becomes visible, 3% could become a battleground where dip-buying outweighs momentum selling.

Tsuyoshi Ueno, chief economist at NLI Research Institute, cautions that breaking above 3% is symbolic, and if market attention shifts to underlying inflation and fiscal concerns, yen-selling pressure could increase. The interplay between yen weakness and the bond market may intensify, potentially leading to further volatility.
