Japan's Core Inflation Remains Above Target at 2.2% in June
Japan's national Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 1.7% year-on-year in June, according to data released on July 19, 2024. This represents a slight deceleration from the 1.8% increase recorded in May.
The core CPI, which excludes volatile fresh food prices, increased by 2.2% year-on-year, matching market expectations and underscoring a steady but moderate inflationary environment.
Key contributors to the June inflation data included higher costs for food (excluding fresh items), energy, and services. Food prices rose 3.5% year-on-year, while energy costs increased by 2.8%.
The Bank of Japan has maintained an ultra-loose monetary policy stance for years, but persistent inflation above its 2% target has fueled speculation about a potential policy shift. The June data provides the central bank with room to consider gradual normalization without immediate pressure for aggressive tightening.
