Japan's Corporate Services Inflation Surges, BOJ Interest Rate Hike Speculation Grows
Japan's corporate services inflation continued to rise in July, with the corporate services price index increasing by more than expected. According to the Bank of Japan, the index rose 3.6% year-on-year in July, beating forecasts of a 3.2% increase. This growth follows a revised 3.4% gain in June.
The rising inflation is attributed to businesses passing on higher costs and expenses to consumers. Recent data showed Japanese consumer inflation accelerating in July from the previous year, with companies transferring import costs stemming from a weak yen and the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran to consumers. While government subsidies have partially shielded consumers from price increases, inflation has continued to rise.
The latest reading is fueling speculation that the Bank of Japan will hike interest rates in September amid growing concerns over sticky inflation.
