Japan's Current Account Surplus Holds Steady at 17.43 Trillion Yen
Japan's current account surplus has remained steady at 17.43 trillion yen in the first half of 2026, according to preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance.
This figure is nearly identical to the 17.51 trillion yen surplus posted in fiscal H1 2025, which itself marked a 14.1% year-over-year jump.
The main driver behind Japan's current account surplus has shifted from exports to investment income from overseas assets, surpassing goods trade balances that often run in deficit.
Energy imports, particularly liquefied natural gas, coal, and oil, continue to weigh on the country's trade balance, despite investment income making up for the difference at the current account level.
