Japan's Debt-Servicing Costs Set to Reach Record High
Japan's debt-servicing costs are expected to surge by 17.1% in the next fiscal year, reaching a record high of ¥36.64 trillion ($230 billion). This increase is largely due to rising long-term government bond yields and interest rates set by the Bank of Japan.
The Finance Ministry plans to request ¥38.69 trillion in the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which represents a 15.1% increase from the current year's budget. The majority of this funding will be allocated towards interest payments and redemption costs.
Japan's fiscal health remains a pressing concern, with its aging population driving up social security costs and an uncertain security environment necessitating increased defense spending.
