Japan's Defense Ministry Seeks Record $57 Billion Budget
Japan's Defense Ministry is planning to request a record-high budget of around 9 trillion yen, or about $57 billion, for fiscal 2027. This would be the highest defense budget ever allocated by the ministry.
The focus will be on enhancing defense capabilities to respond to new methods of warfare that utilize AI and drones. The ministry plans to set up an AI-based decision support system at the Joint Operations Command, which oversees the Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces.
The budget will also prioritize efforts to reinforce the foundation of Japan's defense and secure the capability to fight for prolonged periods. Additionally, the ministry is eyeing the establishment of a system for the government to acquire equipment manufacturing facilities and entrust production and management to private companies.
