Japan's Economy Booms as AI Investments Surge
The Japanese economy is experiencing a significant boost due to investments in artificial intelligence (AI). The S&P Global Flash Manufacturing PMI rose to 55.1 in August, with new orders growing at their fastest rate since January 2018. This growth is attributed to major international AI clients, including foundries, chipmakers, and data center operators.
The Bank of Japan's regional survey indicates that demand for equipment used in semiconductor production and electronic components has increased due to global AI investment. Additionally, demand is starting to move into other sectors such as electrical power generation, communications equipment, and industrial molds.
According to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan's industrial production index improved to 104.6 in June, with a seasonally adjusted increase of 1.9% compared to May and 4.9% year-on-year. The factory operating ratio also increased by 4.1% since the previous month.
Exports grew by 23.2% year-on-year in July to an unprecedented ¥11.5 trillion, exceeding projections of a 19.9% increase. Shipments to the U.S. increased by 22%, and exports to China increased by 25.8%. However, imports grew by 27.8% to a historically high figure of ¥12.1 trillion, mainly due to rising oil prices.
Japan's investment in AI is not limited to supplying the global market; it is also investing heavily in its own sovereign AI project, Noetra, backed by ¥1 trillion over five years. The trade ministry has even purchased 27,500 of Nvidia's next-generation Rubin chips for this project.
