Japan's Foreign Exchange Reserves Plummet Amid Record-Breaking Intervention
Japan's foreign exchange reserves have declined significantly, reaching $1.208 trillion at the end of August - a drop of 6.18% from July and the largest monthly decline on record.
This marks the fourth consecutive monthly drop in Japan's foreign exchange reserves, with the majority of the decrease attributed to a reduction in its overseas securities holdings.
The Ministry of Finance data shows that between July 30 and August 26, Japan utilized $98.66 billion for foreign exchange intervention - the largest single-month effort in history.
This intervention was conducted jointly by Japan and the United States, with part of the operations utilizing the Federal Reserve's central bank liquidity swap lines established during the pandemic.
