Japan's Foreign Exchange Special Account Surplus Hits Record High
The Japanese government's foreign exchange special account saw its surplus reach a record high of 5.0565 trillion yen at the end of fiscal 2025, according to a recent report by the Finance Ministry.
This marks the second-largest level on record for the account, which is used for foreign exchange market interventions.
The surplus decrease from the previous year's record high was attributed to an increase in investment income reflecting higher foreign interest rates and a weak yen.
Of the total surplus, 3.13 trillion yen will be transferred to the government's general account in fiscal 2026, with 752 billion yen allocated for strengthening defense capabilities.
