Japan's FY2027 Budget Requests Soar Past $819 Billion
Japan's FY2027 budget requests are expected to exceed 130 trillion yen ($819 billion), surpassing last year's record of 122 trillion yen. This is due in part to the government's promotion of growth investment, with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's administration setting aside funds for policies requiring multiyear implementation.
The budget requests from ministries and agencies are significantly higher than initially anticipated, reflecting the government's commitment to economic growth and national security. Ministries such as the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Defense Ministry are seeking large increases in funding, with the former requesting around 7.7 trillion yen and the latter asking for a record 8.9 trillion yen.
The increased budget requests will likely lead to new debt issuance, putting additional pressure on Japan's already-strained fiscal health. With tax revenue forecast at 83 trillion yen for FY2026, the government may need to issue more bonds to cover the deficit.
