Japan's Household Spending Slump Clouds Rate Hike Prospects
Japanese households' reluctance to spend despite having savings has left markets questioning whether the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates in September.
The latest data shows that household spending declined by 3.3% year-on-year in June, marking the seventh consecutive month of contraction and falling far short of market expectations for a 1% increase.
This weakness in consumption contrasts sharply with real wages, which posted their sixth straight month of growth in June. However, despite improved purchasing power, households remain cautious about spending, indicating that consumer confidence has yet to recover fully.
The divergence between weak consumption and rising wages has clouded the outlook for a Bank of Japan rate hike in September, potentially leading markets to push back expectations for the timing of such a move.
