Japan's Inflation Hits Highest Level Since January as Energy Costs Soar
Japan's inflation rate has reached its highest level since the beginning of this year. The country's overall inflation stood at 1.9% in July, with energy costs being a major contributor to this figure.
The core inflation rate, which excludes fresh food prices but includes energy costs, also stood at 1.8%. This was in line with expectations. However, the core-core inflation rate, which excludes both fresh food and energy prices, remained steady at 1.9%.
Energy prices have increased for the first time since November 2025, due to high oil prices caused by the conflict in the Middle East. This has led to rising electricity costs, with wholesale inflation reaching 7.2%. Fresh produce prices also rose by 7% in July, compared to a 3.9% increase in June.
The Bank of Japan forecasted that core inflation is likely to accelerate to above 2% from September through March, due to rising wages, higher oil prices, and a weaker yen. This prediction was made in the bank's July forecast.
