Japan's Inflation Rate Accelerates Amid Middle East Conflict and Weak Yen

Japan's inflation rate accelerated in July due to the Middle East conflict and a weak yen. Core inflation excluding food increased to 1.8 percent from 1.6 percent, meeting market expectations.

The unadjusted inflation rate rose to 1.9 percent from 1.6 percent, while stripping out energy prices, inflation grew to 1.9 percent from 1.7 percent. These increases indicate that Japan is moving closer to its target of a 2 percent core inflation rate.

A weak yen has benefits and drawbacks for the Japanese economy. It helps exporters like Toyota and Sony by making their products cheaper in foreign markets, but it also raises costs for imports, such as oil and food.

The Bank of Japan (BoJ) is expected to raise interest rates again this year, which could strengthen the yen. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has implemented measures to shield consumers from rising oil prices through fuel subsidies.
