Japan's JBIC Loans $4.6B to U.S. Energy Projects with Private Bank Support
The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) has announced its second tranche of investment and financing under the Japan-U.S. tariff agreement, providing a total of $4.61 billion in loans to two natural gas-fired power projects in Pennsylvania and Texas.
The loan recipients are major energy infrastructure projects planned by private companies in the United States, with JBIC allocating $2.397 billion to the Pennsylvania project and $2.213 billion to the Texas project.
This marks a significant development as it represents the first time private U.S. banks have participated as lenders in the U.S.-bound investment and financing framework.
The loans are denominated in U.S. dollars, which has been a major challenge for Japanese financial institutions due to dollar-funding challenges. However, with the participation of U.S. banks, such as Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase, this issue is mitigated.
