Japan's JGB Settlement Fails Stay Low in August 2026
The Bank of Japan's monthly data for August 2026 shows that settlement fails in Japan's government bond market remained low, indicating smooth functioning in one of the world's largest debt markets.
There were 429 fails during the month, which is virtually flat compared to 428 in July. However, the combined face value of these fails rose to around ¥1.66 trillion from roughly ¥1.31 trillion a month earlier.
A fail occurs when the party due to receive Japanese government bonds does not get them from the delivering side on the scheduled settlement date. Although it's a routine part of market plumbing, a sharp or sustained rise in fails can signal stress in funding markets or a scramble for specific securities.
