Japan's Katayama Warns of Market Disruption Without Clear JGB Communication
Japan's Vice Finance Minister for International Affairs, Masato Kanda, also known as Katayama, emphasized that clear and consistent communication with the Japanese government bond market is essential before the government compiles its annual budget. This call comes at a critical juncture as the Bank of Japan has been gradually scaling back its massive bond-buying program.
The Ministry of Finance must ensure that its borrowing plans are well-received by a broader, more price-sensitive investor base. Katayama's remarks highlight the risk of market disruption if the government's fiscal trajectory and the BOJ's monetary path are not seen as coherent.
Japan's budget compilation process typically begins in the summer and concludes by the end of the calendar year. Clear communication is a tool to manage expectations and prevent sudden, disorderly moves in the bond market.
