Japan's Medical Expenses Soar to Record High Amid Aging Population
Medical expenses in Japan reached an all-time high of 49.2 trillion yen in fiscal year 2025, a 2.6% increase from the previous year. The country's aging population and advancements in medical technology are contributing factors to this growth.
The health ministry reported that expenses for treating diseases and injuries rose for the fifth consecutive year, with a notable acceleration after three years of slowing growth.
A ministry official attributed part of the increase to the rising use of high-cost medications, such as anticancer drugs.
Per capita medical expenses reached 400,000 yen, up 3.1%, while those aged 75 or over averaged 989,000 yen, four times the average for those under 75 at 261,000 yen.
