Japan's Minimum Wage Hike Path Gains Further Momentum
The Bank of Japan is seeking evidence that minimum wage growth in Japan supports domestic demand. To this end, the country's Labor Ministry has advised raising the nationwide average minimum hourly wage by 4.9% to ¥1,176 ($7.18) for the current fiscal year.
This increase, although smaller than last year's record 6.3%, represents a ¥55-per-hour gain, making it the second-largest rise on record. The recommendation was made by Japan's Labor Ministry advisory panel on July 29, 2026.
The steady growth in minimum wages reflects resilient income growth across the Japanese economy. This development is crucial for the Bank of Japan as it seeks to understand whether wage gains are fueling domestic demand, which has been a concern for policymakers.
