Japan's Power Grid Equipment Market Set for Significant Growth
Fuji Keizai, a Tokyo-based research firm, has forecast significant growth in Japan's domestic market for power receiving and distribution equipment. According to their latest market study, the gas-insulated switchgear market is expected to reach 55 billion yen by 2029, up 27.9% from 2025.
The high-voltage distribution transformer market is projected at 102 billion yen by 2029, a 75.9% increase from 2025. The study attributed the growth to utility spending under Japan's revenue cap regime and steady private-sector demand.
Orders from power companies surged after the introduction of the revenue cap system in 2023, while private-sector demand has remained firm despite supply lagging behind total demand. Labor shortages and longer procurement lead times caused delays in some projects from 2024 to 2025, but the market expanded driven by electric utilities, data centers, factories, and renewable energy applications.
Fuji Keizai expects significant market growth in the second half of 2026 as demand for products meeting new Top Runner transformer standards begins to rise and unit prices increase. The firm forecasts stable market expansion as capacity increases and order backlogs are worked down.
