Japan's Producer Prices Hold Firm, Backing BOJ Rate Hikes
Japan's producer price gains remained elevated in August, supporting the case for further interest rate hikes by the Bank of Japan. According to a report released by the BOJ on Friday, input prices for Japanese firms rose 7.6% year-over-year in August, surpassing economists' median forecast of 7.4%. This increase was slightly lower than the revised 7.7% gain in July, which was the highest since February 2023.
The monthly decrease in producer prices was minimal, with a decline of 0.2% following an upward revision to 0.4% in the previous month's result. This data suggests that inflationary pressures continue to be a concern for the BOJ, which may lead to further monetary policy tightening.
