Japan's Record-Breaking Budget Requests Hit 143 Trillion Yen Mark
The Japanese government has submitted its budget requests for fiscal year 2027, totaling a record-breaking 143 trillion yen. This is an increase of 16.8% from the previous year's initial budget and marks the fourth consecutive year that the total has reached a new high.
The jump in spending reflects the government's decision to include recurring measures previously funded through supplementary budgets in the initial budget, as well as the creation of a new investment quota with no ceiling on funding. General-account requests for this quota, aimed at crisis management and growth investments, came in at 12 trillion yen.
The Finance Ministry will now review these requests before compiling the final fiscal year 2027 budget by the end of the year.
