Japan's Record-Breaking Budget Requests Spark Fiscal Concerns

The Japanese government has submitted its FY 2027 budget requests, totaling a record-high 143 trillion yen ($918 billion), partly due to new investment categories. The Finance Ministry reported that this is the fourth consecutive year for record-breaking budget requests.

The creation of an uncapped special investment category has contributed significantly to the increase in budget requests. This move aligns with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's fiscal policy agenda, but financial markets remain concerned about the government's expanding commitments.

Japan's fiscal health is already considered the worst among major advanced economies, and rising interest rates have increased debt-servicing costs. The assumed interest rate used to calculate payments has been raised to 3.8 percent from 3.0 percent in the fiscal 2026 budget.
