The Japanese government has requested a record-high budget of over 143 trillion yen ($915 billion) for fiscal year 2027. This marks the fourth consecutive year that total requests have reached an all-time high, according to the Finance Ministry.

The removal of a cap on budget requests under the newly-launched investment framework and the integration of spending plans into one budget plan are seen as contributing factors to the record-high total.

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry led the way with a request for 36.6 trillion yen ($234 billion) to address rising social security expenses, while the Finance Ministry requested almost the same amount due to increased long-term interest rates that could push up debt-servicing costs.

Budget requests under the new investment framework totaled over 12 trillion yen ($77 billion), but some requests do not specify concrete amounts, leaving room for further increases in the overall total.
