Japan's Rising Inflation May Favor Regional Banks with Loan-Heavy Books

Japan's inflation is rising closer to the Bank of Japan's 2% target, driven by oil and war-related energy costs. This has investors talking about a potential rate hike, which could reshape which financial stocks benefit from higher yields.

Simply Wall St analyzed three Japanese bank stocks exposed to this story: Nishi-Nippon Financial Holdings (TSE:7189), Hokuhoku Financial Group (TSE:8377), and Hachijuni Nagano Bank (TSE:8359).

Nishi-Nippon Financial Holdings, a loan-focused banking business with a large regional footprint, has seen improving net interest income and solid recent earnings momentum. However, its dividend history is patchy, and the allowance for bad loans looks lean.

Hokuhoku Financial Group, a Toyama-based banking group, ties directly into the rising rate theme through its core focus on loans and deposits for households and small to medium-sized businesses. Its P/E ratio is slightly below the broader banks industry, but forecasts for moderate ROE leave questions about resilience if credit costs rise or growth cools.

Hachijuni Nagano Bank, a long-established regional lender, focuses on traditional loans and deposit services in Nagano and surrounding areas. It has seen recent earnings momentum, improving net interest income, and net profit margins around 27%. However, its forecast ROE remains moderate at about 7.4% in three years.
