Japan's Trade Deficit Narrows as Exports Recover

Japan's trade deficit narrowed in July as exports showed signs of recovery. The country's adjusted merchandise trade balance came in at ¥-686 billion, improving from a revised deficit of ¥-881.9 billion in June. This marks the first time this year that the deficit has decreased month-over-month.

The improvement is attributed to stronger shipments of automobiles, machinery, and electronic components, which are key pillars of Japan's export economy. Imports, while still high due to energy and raw material prices, have begun to moderate. The combination of stronger exports and stabilizing import costs helped shrink the deficit, though it remains in negative territory for the 13th consecutive month.

Economists closely watch these figures for signals on the Bank of Japan's policy path. A sustained improvement in trade could support the case for gradual monetary normalization, but policymakers remain cautious given global slowdown risks. Japan's trade performance is also shaped by demand from key partners, with exports to the US and Europe showing resilience.
