Japan's Yen Gains Spark Alert from Top Currency Diplomat
Japan's top currency diplomat Atsushi Mimura remains on alert regarding recent yen movements. According to Reuters, Mimura expressed concerns over the Japanese currency's gains, stating that he was 'neither satisfied nor reassured' by its developments.
Mimura, Japan's vice finance minister for international affairs, made these comments after returning from the G20 finance leaders' gathering in Asheville, North Carolina. The yen extended its gains on Wednesday following a sudden surge higher, but traders attributed this to rising bets on Bank of Japan rate hikes rather than intervention by Japanese authorities.
Mimura declined to comment on specific currency levels or market movements, citing a state of 'heightened alert' for the country's finance team. When asked about potential interest rate checks, Mimura replied that he would not comment on that matter.
