Japan's Yen Intervention Sparks Market Speculation

The yen has surged against the dollar in a move that suggests Japan may have intervened to prop up its weak currency. The sudden drop of over 5 yen in such a short period of time has alerted investors to the possibility of intervention by Japanese authorities, who have been warning of action for months.

Markets have been on high alert for any signs of yen-buying by Japanese authorities, particularly after recent warnings from officials about the impact of currency weakness on energy import prices. The yen has traded near 40-year lows against the dollar, pressured by Japan's relatively low interest rates and higher energy costs.

DAISAKU UENO, CHIEF FX STRATEGIST AT MITSUBISHI UFJ MORGAN STANLEY SECURITIES, said 'It is hard to imagine anything other than currency intervention causing a drop of as much as 5 yen in such a short period of time.'

While some experts believe the move may be an opportunity for Japan to shift momentum in dollar/yen and potentially spark a carry trade unwind, others are cautious about the implications. JUAN PEREZ, DIRECTOR OF TRADING AT MONEX USA, said 'The yen is a steady-Eddy type of asset. So when in one day, the intraday change, is over 1 per cent, almost 2 per cent as it is in front of me right now, that means that there's some sort of intervention.'

The dollar/yen exchange rate has fallen to 158.61, down 2.5% on the day, with the yen also jumping against other major currencies such as the euro and sterling.
